A remodel is different from a single-room renovation — it's usually several trades working through the same house in sequence, with the schedule and budget riding on how well that sequence is planned. Below is the Blackhorse House project, a full interior-and-exterior remodel we took on in Media, PA: demolition, structural changes to open the floor plan, a finished basement, and an exterior refresh that included a new roof, board and batten siding and a backyard porch. It's a good example of what full-scope remodeling looks like end to end — not just picking finishes, but sequencing demo, structural work, mechanicals and finish carpentry so the house stays livable and weathertight throughout. We take on projects like this across Media, Springfield, Swarthmore, Broomall and Upper Darby. If you're planning a kitchen, basement, or whole-home remodel of your own, see our full remodeling service page for how we scope and run a project like this.
This was a remodeling project that we had in Media Pa. The house had a garage, a sunroom that was used as a salon, living area, and an unfinished basement. Starting with the interior, everything was demolished, from old flooring, to drywall. Two walls were removed to create a more open plan, with the kitchen doubling in size, and connecting with the living room. The basement went from being an unlivable concrete room, to an amazing relax area with a bedroom and full bathroom. Everything was then repainted, retiled, and new flooring was installed. The Exterior got massive upgrades too. The side entrance door was moved to the center with new windows on the sides. A new concrete walkway was poured, with floating shelves and lights. We then reroofed the roof, installed board and batten on the gables, and a porch was built in the backyard. We started with a beat up house that no one would want to go near, to an incredible finished product, with a simple, modern, and very attractive look. Structural changes like removing load-bearing walls were engineered and permitted before any demo started, and the same crew stayed on the project from first wall taken down to final trim, so the finish carpentry, tile work and paint all read as one consistent job rather than a string of subcontractors handing off to each other. The exterior work — reroofing, board and batten on the gables, the new porch and walkway — was sequenced around the interior demo so the house stayed weathertight the whole way through, which matters on a project of this size in a Pennsylvania winter.
A whole-home remodel isn't one trade doing one job — it's demo, framing, electrical and plumbing rough-in, drywall, flooring, tile, cabinetry and finish carpentry, all running through the same rooms in a sequence that has to hold up under a fixed schedule. On the Blackhorse House project that meant coordinating structural wall removal with the electricians and plumbers before drywall went back up, then handing the space to flooring and tile once the rough-in passed inspection. Basements are usually the trickiest part of a remodel like this — turning an unfinished concrete space into a livable bedroom and bathroom means running new mechanicals, insulating and framing walls from scratch, and managing moisture before any finish work starts, since a basement that leaks undoes the finish work fast.
The exterior side of a remodel is easy to underestimate because it doesn't show up in "before and after" kitchen photos, but it's often just as much work — reroofing, siding changes like the board and batten gables here, moving or resizing exterior openings, and hardscape like the concrete walkway and porch. We sequence exterior work so the house stays weathertight while the interior is open, which matters most in the fall and winter months common to a Media, PA remodel timeline. Whether it's a full remodel like Blackhorse House or a single room, we scope out structural, mechanical and finish work up front so the budget and timeline you're quoted is the one you actually get — see our remodeling services page for how we run these projects, or our basement remodeling and kitchen remodeling pages for room-specific scope.
